Amadou Diallo
Youth player released by us last summer, picked up by Newcastle, now training with their first team

Who is making these decisions on the youth players?

Re: Amadou Diallo
John Terry wasn't really a standout player when he was young, he was a midfielder up until his mid teens. Chelsea had apparently agreed an £800,000 deal to sell him to Huddersfield, until an injury crisis got him a chance in the first team.

As Trundle says, the biggest problem we've got now is this manager. The club itself haven't called it too badly with releasing players over the years.

"I do however think this current manager is a disaster for young players."

And that's what the focus should be on this thread, not who we let go 20 years ago.

John Terry was with us until 14.

"Bob Zamora (we had to buy him back), Kieran Richardson, J’Lloyd Samuel, Fitz Hall, Liam Ridgewell."

You're not going to get them all right ffs, and if that's the list we're looking at, then we haven't really done too bad at all over the years. And to split hairs, Kieran Richardson left to go to Man Utd, who were the out and out guvnors at the time.

I do however think this current manager is a disaster for young players.

No brown envelopes change hands when promoting players from the youth/U23 teams.

Not that hard to make 4 out of 2 + 2.

Exactly, we tend to have a habit of selling promising talent for peanuts and replacing them with someone who is on 10 times the wages and dogshit

Id rather Cullen than Carlos Sanchez for example

Or Diangana LW instead of Fornals

and next season id rather have Ashby in our RB options over Coufal and Johnson

Re: Amadou Diallo
It's a very good point. I feel that's what Ben Johnson is for us. Solid player but unlikely to be a star. Very handy to have in the squad and hopefully a starter one day.

Gets coated off a lot for being shit though, sadly.

Bob Zamora (we had to buy him back), Kieran Richardson, J’Lloyd Samuel, Fitz Hall, Liam Ridgewell.

None of them world-beaters (Zamora the best of that lot, played for England), but would all have done a job for us at some point in our history.

With your youth players, you’re not always looking for them to be Rio, Frank, Johnson, Carrick or Joe Cole. Sometimes they can become the reliable back-ups in the squad - and that’s what I think we’re missing out on at the moment.

Ashby will probably go on to be a decent player. Probably not a world-beater. But that’s not necessarily the point.

I’m amazed by many of you thinking you know better than the experienced coaches, you can’t name one player that had left and made it. Perhaps Ray Houghton.

Give em a chance to learn.
They'learn

If not.

Might as well hire a 10 seater taxi with the amount of players leaving to find first team football in the North East.

Re: Amadou Diallo
Wasn't Harry Kane an uninspiring youth player, out on loan at Norwich and Orient ?. They were going to sell him to a lower tier team but a first squad player got injured and they brought him in

Morale here is you don't fucking know if they are any good unless you try them

Longello looked decent when he played, binned
Scarles looks decent, will no doubt be sold to Sunderland or Newcastle !

Re: Amadou Diallo
Just because they havent gone on to much elsewhere doesnt mean they wouldnt of been a success here

eg i think Diangana would of been a much better player had he stayed here and given the game time to push on

Yup. There has been a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth over countless youth players leaving (their choice or ours) in the last decade or so, but out of those who have left, especially where it's been our decision, you can probably count on the fingers of one hand those who have actually had success in the Premier League. It seems to be a lot of tough choices but almost always the correct choices.

Jimmy Bullard and Junior Stanislas are about the only ones I can recall. If that starts to change, then something is seriously wrong.
